In the construction of dirigibles, duralumin is used almost exclusively in ships of the Zeppelin type for the rigid framework. In a general way, the hull structure of the Zeppelin dirigible consists of a series of transverse polygonal-shaped rings connected by longitudinal girders. Reference has previously been made to the metal-clad dirigible, a new development in lighter-than-air ships. In this construction, thin duralumin or Alclad sheet serves as the gas container and outer covering, replacing the conventional fabric, netting, and wiring.
