THE YEAR 1989 marked the two-hundredth anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, the beginning of the French Revolution, and its Napoleonic sequel. This great upheaval was not confined within the boundaries of France, most of Europe and some parts of the world were sucked into the maelstrom. For a quarter of a century France kept Europe in turmoil; there was uncertainty, terror, intrigue, strife, bloodshed and war.
