Jan. 11--Beer and wine in Pennsylvania supermarkets? Unlikely as it seems, two Pennsylvania grocery chains are pushing in that direction.
Wegmans Food Markets Inc. plans to buy liquor licenses for its 11 Pennsylvania stores, first selling beer for takeout and eventually beer, wine and spirits to drink in the stores' cafes. Wegmans' move is not the radical step many Pennsylvania shoppers wish for -- namely having beer and wine on the supermarket shelf just like any other packaged good -- but it edges closer and has potential to cause a shift in the state's tightly regulated market.
