A few years ago, faced with a backed up septic system again (regular toilet paper wreaks havoc on septic systems), my mind was stretching for a long term solution to this predicament.
While leafing through the extensive magazine library in our bathroom during a lengthy visit, I ran across several articles on indoor "worm gardens." These familiar garden workers were being employed inside the house to dispose of kitchen wastes. These little manufacturers of high quality manure do an amazing job of turning food scraps into fertilizer, effectively ending all those trips outside to the compost heap.
