OAKLAND - The convergence of a new City Council here was downright harmonic Tuesday night, marked by a series of unanimous decisions and repeated audience applause.
That wouldn't be news in most towns. But it was in Oakland: The meeting that began with the swearing-in of new Mayor Nanci Staples and Councilors Andrea Botwinick, Jana Cunningham and Linda West was a far cry from those of the past year and a half.
"It was a little surprising," Staples said Wednesday morning. "I kind of was anticipating we'd still have some opposition out there. But I figured I was just going to get up there and be me."
