NEW YORK -- Three high-ranking black firefighters charged the city Fire Department with racial discrimination Wednesday, saying they have been passed over for promotions in favor of whites with less stellar records and fewer years on the job.
The three -- all lieutenants with at least 18 years on the force -- have filed a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a precursor to filing a federal lawsuit.
At a news conference, their attorney, Bonita Zelman, said the firefighters plan to sue both the Fire Department and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen.
