ORLANDO, Fla. -- All her life, Bertha Mootry loved to cook. Whenever she paid her daughter Della Lawhorne a visit, Mootry would disappear into the kitchen. A tangle of aromas would fill the house and tease stomachs and make mouths water. Soon she would emerge with supper in her hands, and enough fixings neatly stacked in the freezer to round out the week.
Three years ago Mootry stopped cooking. Just like that. She stopped tending the flower garden she so loved too.
Then came the odd telephone calls: Relatives bearing provisions went to Mootry's home in Buffalo, N.Y., to find her pantry plentifully stocked.
