INTRODUCTION
Environmental management in transition economies is difficult because economic and institutional change creates significant risks and uncertainty for strategic decisions (Peng, 2000) and this is particularly true for the Central and East European (CEE) countries. Economic reforms in the CEE countries were primarily designed to increase the efficiency of state-owned enterprises and make products more competitive at an international level (Filatotchev, 2005). Economic reforms were made more difficult by political change, the break-up of the former Soviet Union and the collapse of the East European trading bloc (Uhlenbruck, Meyer, and Hitt, 2003; ...
