THE FIRST HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY WAS A time of great restlessness and uncertainty in America. During this period men came to believe that with hard work and perhaps a little luck anything was possible. As a result, men scrambled from place to place in search of opportunity and financial gain. But there were violent upswings and downswings in the economy, and men lost fortunes as quickly as they won them. Success and political importance, Americans learned, did not guarantee immunity from failure and disgrace.
