NEW YORK -- The Fresh Kills landfill will close on schedule by Jan. 1, 2002, Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Monday in announcing a modification to the consent decree governing the 3,000-acre dump.
``Fresh Kills will close and it will close on time,'' Pataki said in a news release. ``This agreement keeps the promise we make to the people of Staten Island and the people of New York that we would end this environmental nightmare.''
