Easter bread scented with spices from the Mediterranean once again will be the star of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church's annual bake sale in Akron, Ohio. Orders already are pouring in for the 800 handmade, braided loaves.
The secret to the haunting flavor of the bread is a pair of Mediterranean spices -- ``mahlepi'' and ``mastika.'' Mahlepi is the kernel of a wild cherry tree that grows in the Mediterranean region. Mastika is the resinous gum of a small evergreen tree native to the island of Chios.
Both spices can be bought at Greek grocery stores. The spices are sold whole, and must be ground before use.
