DEAR HELOISE: Do you have a recipe for mock apple pie made with crackers? I made it once for my brother, who had a thing for apple pie, his favorite. He ate two slices and thought it was the real thing.

I have looked everywhere but no luck. -- J. Bubolz, Springfield, Mo. DEAR SPRINGFIELD: You're in luck. This recipe is from my mother's original newspaper column from December 1959. We made this in the office, and it's unbelievable. If you don't tell, they probably won't guess.

MOCK APPLE PIE 2 cups water 1 1/4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 20 whole soda crackers
