Religious symbol or myth? The history of the candy cane has about as many stories as Santa has reindeer. Pay attention, Rudolph.
According to the National Confectioners Association/Chocolate Manufacturers Association, the candy cane symbolizes the shepherds' crook. It was, after all, the lowly shepherds who were the first to see and worship baby Jesus.
Legend has it that the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in 1670, who, afraid his little singers would grow restless during the beautiful but long living creche ceremony, handed out candy sticks to keep them quiet. He bent the candy in the shape of a crook to honor the season.
