Pope John Paul II has just completed the Polish text of a new book, Crossing the Threshold of Hope. The Italian publisher, Mondadori -- controlled up to 47 percent by the new prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi -- took the book to New York "superagent" Mort Janklow, whose clients include Judith Krantz, Danielle Steele and Ronald Reagan.
It has been widely reported that Random House paid an estimated $6 million advance for the English-language rights. The 230-page book is expected to appear next November. Any profits -- and they may be expected to be huge -- will go to charity.
