DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Once upon a time, there was a Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale, a B. Altman and an R.H. Macy who sat at the helm of small family-run retail operations.
Even more recently, Gilbert McCurdy and a Robert Adam still held the reigns to their department-store chains McCurdy & Co. and Adam, Meldrum & Anderson.
The fate of these eponymouslynamed retail operations is fairly well-known in the retail industry.
