A number of innovations have found their way into the outdoor market in recent years, but none is more high-tech than the GPS unit.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. Twenty-four satellites orbit the Earth twice each day at an altitude of 12,000 miles, broadcasting a high-frequency radio signal. A person with a GPS receiver can use and interpret these signals to get an accurate read on his or her location.
