Hooked rugs have nearly as long a history in the United States as the country itself.

The heydey of hooked rugs was during the mid-19th century in New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada, where this art was brought over by voyagers and sailors.

Hooked rugs originally covered beds and other pieces of furniture, rather than floors, and often depicted geometric designs and scenes. These decorative rugs were made in all sizes and also were used on tables and chests and the area in front of hearths.
