With the passing of summer, those of us in the northern part of the country are less likely to be troubled with insect pests, but for our southern cousins they remain a year-round problem. So how do we best deal with them? Do the billions of dollars we spend each year for chemicals to battle the critters cause more harm than good? Probably.

Once upon a time, we sprayed our homes and yards with the latest deadly chemical available. When DDT and chlordane were linked to cancer, we began giving more thought to other means of pest control. Today, the buzz word is "integrated pest management," advocated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
