WASHINGTON _ For years the National Rifle Association has relied on frontal assaults to easily win its battles in Congress over guns.
But after a series of tactical defeats in the House and Senate on a proposed ban on 18 assault-style weapons, the NRA has turned to total war in the final crime bill showdown.
While senators' phones ring off the hooks with calls from NRA troops in the field, more sophisticated gun lobbyists on Capitol Hill have threatened members of Congress with retribution for negative votes and tried to change the subject from guns to Democratic pork.
