A new state law forcing employers to pay for health insurance that includes birth control is unconstitutional, according to a lawsuit the Catholic Church filed against the state on Monday.
The New York State Catholic Conference is attempting to block the new law, which takes effect Wednesday. It mandates insurers to cover costs of doctor-prescribed contraception as well as more frequent mammograms and osteoporosis exams.
The law amounts to a ``governmental assault'' on the Catholic Church and ``its moral and ethical teachings,'' Catholic bishops said in a statement Monday.
