As soon as I finished reading James Goodman's evocative and moving book about the Scottsboro case and its narrators, I wiped the tears from my eyes and called my great-uncle B. Because Goodman set out not only to recount the case but to explore the different ways the participants and observers recounted it, how they fought one another over "what happened" and what it all meant, I thought it would be interesting to ask someone from that generation what he/she remembered about Scottsboro.
