Q. When I signed up for cable service last year, the company made me rent a receiving box, even though I had a ``cable-ready'' TV and was only interested in clear reception of my local channels. Isn't this a rip-off? 
A. The Federal Communications Commission thinks so. It has forced cable companies to unscramble the most basic level of service, often called ``off-air'' or ``lifeline.'' 
Try disconnecting the incoming cable wire from the box. Also unscrew the wire running from the box to your TV antenna input. Now connect the cable company's main line directly to the antenna input on the back of your TV and turn on the set.
