Jan. 14--Hamburg High School's driver education course could be one of the district's first casualties under a state law that limits property tax increases to fund public schools.

The Hamburg School District would have to get voter approval for next year's budget if a tax hike exceeds a state-imposed cap.

Hamburg eliminated funding for driver education in a proposed 2007-08 budget to avoid a referendum on its budget in the May primary.

The proposed $32.1 million budget calls for a 1.65-mill tax hike.
