Some folks get so discouraged by projections of college costs that they give up trying to save. After all, four years of tuition, room and board at some elite colleges already cost more than $100,000.
But don't get too depressed. Some of the scary stuff about college costs is exaggerated, says Flora Williams, a Purdue University researcher.
Reports on college costs tend to focus on the sticker price, without factoring in grants, scholarships and other aid that amount to price discounts. Some estimates assume that college costs will keep rising as rapidly as they have in the recent past, though that is not at all certain.
