WASHINGTON -- More than 1,100 schools in five states are located within a half-mile of a federal- or state-designated toxic waste site, according to report to be released today by an environmental group headed by Love Canal activist Lois Gibbs.
Some of those on the list are in Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties.
The report found that of the five states surveyed, only California has regulations requiring state and local officials to test proposed school sites for hazardous chemicals. The other states in the survey are Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and New York.
