Two environmental groups want to preserve marine ecosystems by blocking off large sections of the northwest Atlantic Ocean to fishing and other human activities.
A recent report published by the Conservation Law Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund of Canada identifies a sample network of 30 individual conservation areas; the network's combined area is 24,000 square miles, or about 20 percent of the ocean from Cape Cod to eastern Canada's Scotian Shelf. Extending 10 to 200 miles from shore, the conservation areas identified represent all marine habitat types found in the region.
