Colonie On sultry summer nights, a baseball fan's heart sinks when driving along Watervliet Shaker Road past the forlorn, darkened shell of Heritage Park.
The crack of a wooden bat and cheers rising from the bleachers on the first-base line have been silenced. Little Leaguers with stiff gloves and shiny uniforms no longer dream of catching foul balls under the floodlights.
There is no joy in Latham. The Diamond Dogs struck out.
After two decades, minor league baseball is gone from the cozy ballpark in the flight path of Albany International Airport and in the shadow of a Shaker cemetery.
