Wireless fidelity, better known as Wi-Fi or, more formally, 802.11b, is gaining popularity. Home users and business proprietors use it to share an Internet connection, files and add-on devices such as printers among networked computers.
It's a good system, but there are security risks inherent to the way Wi-Fi works.
Once installed, computers on a Wi-Fi network communicate using radio waves, not cables. A single access point can network computers up to 300 feet away, depending on walls and other obstructions. A router connects the networked computers to the Internet.
