David Brinkley possessed an air of wisdom leavened by a wit that could be wicked but almost never cruel. He was also a master at using a tool that terrifies most television personalities: silence.

His minimalist style depended on a laconic Southern accent and hesitation-filled voice. It was as if each of Brinkley's words took effort to bring out.

As a young producer for ABC News, Neal Shapiro came across Brinkley one day in the coffee room. Shapiro, who grew up in Delmar, asked the commentator and occasional anchor if he would like a cup.
