Article: HOMEMADE WEDDING CAKE: HERE COMES THE PRIDE.(LIFE & LEISURE)

Byline: ED MURRIETA Knight Ridder

``I do.''

Regret set in as soon as the words left my lips.

The question? ``Do you think you could help me make a wedding cake tomorrow?''

We were both just a couple of months out of cooking school, where I'd baked, assembled and decorated my first -- and until then, only -- wedding cake.

After enduring the cold-sweat intensity of what my culinary classmates called ``hell week,'' I vowed the devil's tail would freeze before I dared another wedding cake.

Like the institution of marriage itself, making a wedding cake is not for the faint of heart.
