Before Anthony Montes puts paintbrush to canvas, he turns to his vast Latin music collection for inspiration. There, amid the sizzling rhythms of salsa and pounding percussion of merengue, Montes finds his muse. Only then do the bold lines and vibrant hues of a Caribbean-colored past merge with the sounds and scenescapes of his childhood.
Montes paints homages to the American and Cuban cultures that nurtured him. Born to Cuban immigrants in New York City, Montes, 37, grew up in a small Caribbean community in Queens, where Latin jazz mingled with Creole cooking. And the young Montes, although far from his ...
