The study of early modern maps has undergone an important transformation in the past few years. Earlier investigations concentrated on the beauty and rarity of maps as objects, with little attention to their role or context. More recently, historians of cartography have begun to examine maps in context and the result is an exciting new understanding of maps as products of their context and a rich source for the interpretation of that context.
