SAN JOSE, Calif. _ U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan on Tuesday resigned as the Justice Department's top law enforcement official in Northern California, ending a stormy tenure as his powerful office continues to probe Silicon Valley's stock options backdating scandal, the BALCO steroids case and the Hewlett-Packard spying drama.
Ryan announced his resignation amid reports that he and six other top federal prosecutors around the country are being forced out by the Bush administration.
