Dane County Humane Society officials said they've nearly reached the end of their leash after spending $200,000 to care for 47 pit bulls whose owners face dog fighting charges.
The dogs belong to Robert Lowery and his wife, Julie Dzikowich, who were arrested in June. The dogs are considered wards of the state -- evidence against the couple.
Robert Lowery was convicted of running a marijuana importation operation and is awaiting sentencing in federal court.
Humane Society President Cathy Holmes said its shelter has had to turn many other dogs away because more than half its space is taken up by the pit bulls. It ...
