The images created 40 years ago when members of the Black Panther Party stood up in Oakland, Calif., to defend Black communities against police brutality are still powerful, evoking a time when the status quo was changing rapidly and revolution seemed possible. The Panthers touched a nerve, and seemingly overnight membership exploded to include an estimated 5,000 members in chapters in 48 states with coalition and support groups in Europe, Asia and Africa.
