Jan. 17--A cancellation by superstar soprano Renee Fleming gave New Yorker Philharmonic listeners a chance to hear the wonderful bass Rene Pape in a tribute to the conductor Arturo Toscanini Tuesday night in New York City. After hearing Pape at the Cleveland Orchestra's dress rehearsal of Beethoven's Ninth last Wednesday, I know those New Yorkers were in for a treat. Last week, Pape's big, velvety sound carried easily, even though the crowd filled Severance Hall to the rafters. No projection problems for him.
