Ralph Bunche: An American Life by Brian Urquhart. W. W. Norton, 496 pp., $27.50. The author of the authoritative life of Dag Hammarskjold now has done the same for Bunche. Urquhart was his chief assistant at the UN and his successor as peacekeeping administrator. His narrative, written with style and insight and with skillful use of Bunche's papers and his own memories, does justice to an extraordinary individual.
