COEYMANS -- Phones at the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society have been ringing nonstop with calls from hopeful pet owners looking to adopt one of the 287 animals seized Wednesday from a shelter accused of animal cruelty, the group's officials said. The group turned away as many as 500 callers Thursday, explaining that the animals were being held as evidence in the animal cruelty case against Cherokee Ridge Animal Rescue Facility owner Sue Peters, 41.
