The nation's dropout problem may be far larger than previously thought, according to a study that looked at 10,000 schools in an attempt to shed light on the extent of the problem.

Dropout rates are notoriously unreliable, education experts agree, and the actual number of those who leave high school before they graduate is almost certainly higher than what is officially reported.

Now, a study from researchers at Johns Hopkins University has looked at the issue from a new angle, by measuring the number of students who move from freshman to senior status in four years. The authors call it ``promoting power.''
