An auditing firm is studying the efficiency of Head Start as the Ballston Spa Board of Education weighs whether or not to continue sponsoring the program for Saratoga County.
The school district has been awarded federal money to run Head Start in the county since the program began nationally in 1965. It is the only school district in the state that administers the grant for an entire county, according to Superintendent John Gratto. This school year, the grant was $4.5 million to cover the cost of 125 employees and 434 students.
Children in the district make up less than 30 percent of total enrollment. As they ...
