With the discerning air of a concert musician, Dorothy Sweeney surveys the array of household goods. A shredded grocery bag. A clock. A couple of plungers. An empty candy bag.

As a handful of people watch in the small University at Albany lecture room, Sweeney settles on a box of elbow macaroni. The 81-year-old -- elegant, sharp and armed with a gentle self-deprecating humor -- brings the pasta box to her ear. Slowly, with steely concentration, her arms begin to move in a broad circle.
