Even though we've all seen the rise in popularity of the large ``dream homes,'' there is still much to be said about living small. Small houses tend to cost less to heat and cool, making them more environ- mentally friendly. They are usually more affordable and often have a cozy, intimate quality that larger homes may lack. And as my mother always used to say, there is less to keep clean in a smaller space.
While Kevin and I have had the luxury of room since our two boys went off to college, this wasn't always the case. Like so many New Yorkers, and newlyweds everywhere, our first home was compact. But it wasn't in our first home that I learned economy of scale ...
