Nielsen SoundScan has released year-end music sales figures for the US. Overall music sales, including albums, singles, music videos and digital downloads, landed just shy of 1.2 billion units, up 19.4% over 2005. However, when limited to total album sales--which excludes individual track downloads--unit sales fell by 4.9% to 588.2 million from 618.9 million in the prior year.
Not surprisingly, considering the staggering sales figures for iPods and the introduction of Microsoft's new Zune player, digital track sales reached 581.9 million, up 65% over 2005's 352.7 million, SoundScan reported.
