Our worst fears have been affirmed: Chronic wasting disease is indeed loose in New York's wild deer herd.
When the depressing news came from Cornell University labs this week, state DEC wildlife pathologist Ward Stone said he wasn't surprised. He expected this, sooner or later. He also anticipates that over time there will be other cases. It's in the nature of the beast.
The hopeful part is that only a few materialize, and only then in a designated containment area around the original two captive deer herds in Oneida County that tested positive earlier this month. That's our new best hope now that we know it's in the wild.
