WASHINGTON - As the Pentagon puts the final touches on its list of recommended military base closings, political warfare already is breaking out over which facilities will get the ax.
Supporters of the Air National Guard are girding for what could be a large number of closures among their 70-plus facilities around the country when Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld releases the Pentagon list later this month.
This concern has provoked stern warnings from a pair of senators and an attempt from House Speaker Dennis J. Hastert to head off any Guard closures.
