NEW YORK - It has become a most unfathomable fallibility. On Wednesday it begat a pitching line - two-thirds of an inning, five runs, three walks - that smacks of a cross-eyed, floppy-socked lefty just called up from Triple-A.
It also presented the baseball world with a scene it never expected: The great Mariano Rivera, booed upon his exit from one of the most bizarre ninth innings in recent Yankees history.
Four times in a row, he has taken the mound with a chance to close the Boston Red Sox. Four times in a row, he has failed - a streak rapidly reaching epic, psychoanalytic ...
