I don't remember my first day of middle school, but I do remember how I felt in those early days. The hallways seemed too big and too crowded with unfamiliar faces, and we ricocheted off one another in a confused rush to find our classrooms. Invariably, mine was at the opposite end of the school from where I was, so I remember the twinges of panic.
All of these feelings returned last month when I saw my oldest daughter, Ellen, off for her first day of middle school. To me, she looked too little and vulnerable for this - still a fifth-grader not a sixth-grader.
