WASHINGTON _ Beatrice Henderson, who has three grandchildren suffering from sickle cell disease, remembers a time not too long ago when the campaign to fight sickle cell attracted public attention and money.
But as Sickle Cell Month ended this week with hardly any major public clamor, Henderson and others in the sickle cell battle were acknowledging a harsh reality.
``Every year the money is getting less and less,'' said Henderson of Houston. ``And people don't support it. If they just realized how serious this disease really is, maybe they'd want to help.''
