S o what's really changed in the long and tiring saga of state Sen. Ada Smith?

Six months ago, Ms. Smith was arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault after a legislative aide accused the senator of throwing coffee in her face. Ms. Smith denied doing anything of the sort.

Nine days ago, Ms. Smith was found to be guilty of the reduced charge of second-degree harassment - a criminal violation, not even a misdemeanor - by an Albany City Court judge. She again denied doing anything wrong.

"I still pledge to you this never happened," Ms. Smith said upon her conviction. "Never in my life have I intentionally hurt anyone."
