To viewers who were not around in the 1940s, much of the repertoire of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman (two of modern dance's most important pioneers in America) is like a chimera, composed of illusive fragments captured in old photographs or in warmly descriptive prose. The presentation of seven of these dances by the Charles Weidman Dance Foundation was an occasion to celebrate the works and the fact that these compositions have been preserved, either through Labanotation or the ancient tradition of passing them, like myths, from artists of one generation to those of the next.
